DFA-Tucson Urges Rep. Giffords to take action on Iraq and Iran

DFA-Tucson is urging CD8 Representative, Gabrielle Giffords, to support HR 508 to bring our troops home and HCR 33 to make a statement against a premediated and unauthorized attack on Iran.

Representative Giffords sits on the powerful House Armed Services Committee and has the opportunity to force a review and discussion of these bills along with their referral to the floor.

Representative Gabrielle Giffords
Arizona 8th District
U.S. House of Representatives
1661 North Swan, Suite112
Tucson, AZ 85712

Dear Representative Giffords,

We the undersigned urge you, as citizens and as members and representatives of Democracy for America-Tucson, to follow through with your campaign promise of doing your outmost to help bring an end to the US occupation of Iraq and to bring our troops home. We urge you to co-sponsor and vote for HR 508 and HCR 33 . There is no graver threat to our national security than the continuation of this conflict and the executive branch’s reckless strategy of regional escalation.

As you are well aware, contrary to the recommendations of the bipartisan Baker commission on Iraq, countless military and regional experts, and contrary to the strong US and world public opinions, the executive branch is pursuing a strategy of regional escalation instead of de-escalation. It has decided to reject cooperation and dialogue with Iraq’s neighbors and is very likely to have secret reckless plans to launch a premeditated, unprovoked, and unauthorized assault on Iran with more catastrophic regional and global consequences ahead.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee you have the important responsibility of making sure that bills dealing with Iraq are reviewed and voted on expeditiously. Rejecting additional troops, setting up a time-table for troop withdrawal and redeployment, and preventing a US military attack on Iran are paramount elements of any plan hoping to end this conflict and bringing our troops home. We look forward to hearing from you on this grave issue.

Urgently and respectfully
